Visit England Awards for sites offering the warmest welcome in Dorset, including this unassuming spot

Situated on the Jurassic Coast a stone’s throw from Beach Gardens with its practice greens, tennis courts and refreshments, this is one of Dorset’s most prestigious hotels. Glenlee Guest House, a 1930s property, has just been named one of the 100 best places to stay in England.

With Swanage beaches just a five minute walk away and the town center a 10 minute walk along the ballroom, the unassuming building may not immediately come to mind as one of the best places to stay in the country, but has just been named to the Visit England ROSE awards list.

ROSE, an acronym for Recognition of Service of Excellence, celebrates accommodation providers who offer visitors “the warmest of welcomes”. They mark places to stay where owners, management and employees, regardless of star rating, style or accommodation type, deliver exceptional experiences for their guests.

Glenlee Guest House, on Cauldon Avenue, is one of six places in Dorset to be honoured. Across the South West, 21 places have been recognized by VisitEngland. Visitors to the Swanage B&B have shared their praise on TripAdvisor. Robert C wrote: “We stayed here a few years ago and it was the first time with the new owners, taking advantage of a late cancellation. We were not disappointed.

“There was an excellent choice for breakfast which we had chosen the night before and there was also the option of having an evening meal (which we did one evening) from a good selection of choices. Saved a headache of deciding where to eat and would recommend anyone staying to take advantage of this offer.”

Mike added: “Glenlee Guest House has to be the best guest house we have ever stayed in. Bob and Tom were so welcoming and went out of their way to make sure your stay was everything you wanted.” Reservations for the Glenlee Guest House can be made here.

Other VisitEngland ROSE winners include:

Hotel Wessex Royale – High Street, Dorchester

The Best Western-owned venue is also located close to the Jurassic Coast. Originally a former coaching inn, it was built in 1756. It has now been converted into modern accommodation. Classically designed rooms mean the High Street location is ideal for a weekend break or business trip. It has already been praised by VisitEngland for its breakfasts and awarded a 3* silver award.

Birchcroft Hideaway – Christchurch Road, Ferndown

Nestled at the end of a winding country lane, Birchcroft is a detached cottage surrounded by rhododendrons and sitting on an acre of land. It is within walking distance of the local forests. The chalet bungalow sleeps eight people and offers enough bedrooms and bathrooms to comfortably accommodate two families. There is a large garden leading to the 19 acre forest filled with rabbits, foxes and even wild deer.

And although it is in a secluded location, it is only 10 kilometers from Bournemouth with the beaches and all the facilities the town has to offer. Reservations are available here.

Bradle Farm – Bradle, Wareham

A classic mansion farmhouse, the bed and breakfast is located in the heart of the Purbeck Hills. It has stunning views across open fields to Corfe Castle. The original building started life as a farm and was even mentioned in the Doomsday Book. But disaster struck in the early 1800s when it was all but destroyed in a fire.

Rebuilt in 1862 with Purbeck stone, it became a mansion for Lord Eldon’s family before becoming a working farm in the early 1900s. Now a superb B&B, it offers homemade sausages and bacon straight from the farm and eggs from his own chickens. To book, go here.
