Two West Texas sites in the top 10 in the United States

From Gulf Coast adventures to desert day trips, Texas has no shortage of outdoor travel destinations and two Lone Star locations were just ranked among America’s top options for backpackers.

On Tuesday, Best Life, a lifestyle publication, released a roundup highlighting America’s best parks for hiking and two West Texas sites in the top eight.

The Best US National Parks for Hiking

Overall, Zion National Park in Utah took the top spot in the rankings. The site is a permanent draw for hiking enthusiasts with a number of popular hikes ranging from the 3.5 mile Pa’rus Trail hike to the 9.4 mile Narrows hike via Riverside Walk.

Acadia National Park in Maine is ranked second in the roundup. Pine Tree State National Park includes a number of scenic hiking options ranging from the 2.2 km Beehive Loop to the 11 km Cadillac South Ridge Trail.

Two Lone Star State locations have ranked in America’s Top 10 Parks for Hiking and both are in West Texas.

Guadalupe Mountains

Guadalupe Mountains came in at No. 3 on the list. Located in Salt Flat, Texas, the national park has over 80 miles of hiking trails in West Texas, including a hike to the so-called “Top of Texas”, the highest point in the state . Trails include options along McKittrick Canyon, salt pan dunes, trails through Dog Canyon as well as excursions through Frijole Ranch.

Canyonlands (Utah), Yosemite (California), the Great Smoky Mountains (Tennessee) and Glacier National Park (Montana) claim four to seven spots, in order.

Big Bend, located just outside of Terlingua, Texas, is home to more than 150 miles of hiking trails, including options through the West Texas desert, the vast Chisos Mountains, and along the Rio Great with options ranging from the Boquillas Canyon Trail to the Marufo Hike from Vega to the 10.5 mile trek to Emory Peak.

Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii and Rocky Mountain National Park in Tennessee round out the top 10, in order.

Interestingly, none of the places in Texas listed in the best place to hike in the US are among the top 25 most-visited US parks, according to NPS data, although Great Smoky Mountains National Park and Zion all have two reached the top 10 at No. 2. and No. 10, respectively.
